Dangerous electric bike defects that can cause injuries

On Behalf of | Jul 12, 2025 | Personal Injury

Electric bikes (e-bikes) are cost-effective and fun to ride. However, they are relatively dangerous. People can end up in crashes if they do not follow the rules of the road.

The risk of injury is significantly higher if people acquire an e-bike with defective components or faulty design. There are several somewhat common e-bike defects that could put cyclists and even their family members at risk of injury and serious property damage.

1. Faulty wires or batteries

There have been multiple e-bike recalls in recent years. Many of them involve e-bikes with faulty wiring or bad batteries. These bikes may catch fire during charging or may fail spontaneously in traffic. Either scenario can lead to catastrophic losses.

2. Weak tires or faulty rims

A tire blowout is one of the most devastating failures a cyclist can experience. Especially if they are in traffic, traveling at high speeds, a tire failing could throw them into traffic and cause major injuries.

Some tires fail because they are faulty. Other times, issues with the rims on the bicycle wheels could cause a tire blowout.

3. Control malfunctions

Riders need to be able to effectively control their e-bikes. If something goes wrong with the controls, such as the switch to activate the assisted ride function, the rider could end up losing control of the e-bike with little advance notice.

When e-bike collisions or house fires occur due to defective design or improper manufacturing processes, injured people may have rights. Pursuing a product defect personal injury lawsuit can sometimes lead to compensation for those harmed by unsafe products, including defective e-bikes.
